Groups
Anyone wishing to become active and participate in conservation
please contact the group in your area.
We are a group of conservators and other interested individuals
who promote conservation in Alberta. ARG! is affiliated
with the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural
Property and participates as a Museums Alberta Special Interest
Group. The first meeting of Conservators in Alberta (CIA)
took place in October 1979, in Stettler, during an Alberta
Museums Association conference. Our founding members were
Lisa Mibach, Ann Lambert and Gail Niinimaa. http://www.cac-accr.ca/english/e-CAC-about-ARG.asp
The 2006 CAC Conference and Workshop was great success!
Conservators from all disciplines came to Toronto from across
the country and the globe to share their work and ideas.
The event gave local conservators the chance to showcase
their city and their institutions. Building on this momentum,
the Toronto Area Conservators Group (TACG) is being revived! The
aim of TACG is to provide an informal forum for conservators
in the GTA to establish and build relationships with their
colleagues, foster dialogue across specializations, share
information about their work and have some fun! This will
take place in pub nights interspersed with occasional sessions
that may include tours, speakers or other presentations
to be held at local institutions. There are no fees to be
a part of TACG. Contact: tacg-cac@hotmail.com
The Atlantic Regional Group (ARG) is a group of conservators
and interested affiliated professionals that provides a
forum for discussion and promotion of conservation on the
east coast of Canada. Isolation can be a problem, particularly
for private conservators, so sometimes it's nice just to
get together for lunch and talk shop! The group tries to
have regular meetings and continues to develop strategies
for bringing conservation into the community at large. Modelled
on the AIC initiative, such strategies as "ARG Angels"
(inception in 2005) provides local arts, heritage and cultural
institutions with the opportunity to have one day of access
to conservation personnel on site working with them, dealing
with problems and giving advice on preservation issues affecting
their collections. This increases their knowledge about
conservation matters and helps to make conservators more
accessible. Whenever possible, the ARG provides its members
with a training excursion, usually involving a local institution
where the experience is reciprocally enjoyed. The ARG can
be soon be reached through its new website, coming soon:

The PCG, although about 25 or 30 years old, is an extremely
informal group. There is no-one in charge, there is no contact
person, there is no number to call, no membership fees.
(This is the West Coast) There is a binder that passes back
and forth between Vancouver and Victoria, held by whoever
is organizing the next meeting. Which is decided at the
previous meeting. We meet on a Friday in the fall (usually
inNovember)in Victoria, and in the spring(usually May)in
Vancouver. The meeting location varies, depending on who
takes on the organization and what kind of space they can
arrange. The contact list is passed withthe binder and by
e-mail. The papers sometimes follow a theme, but generally
are whatever anyone (strong-armed by the current organiser)has
to say.As it happens, Colleen Wilson and Kjerstin Mackie
are putting together the next gathering which will be on
Friday, November 3rd at the Forestry Centre of the Pacific
and are looking for presentations on the general theme of
"Putting the Fun back in Fungi", well, anything
to do with fungi, actually. We hope to work in a tour of
the Mycological Collection (which is why we're meeting at
the Forestry Centre)(or vice versa). In addition, we will
be hosting a workshop on the two previous days, November
1 and 2, at an as yet undetermined location. Malcom Bilz
and Tara Grant of the CCI will be teaching "Conservation
of Wet Archaeological Wood, Basketry and Leather Artifacts”.
The cost is yet to be determined, registration is limited,
enquiries should be made to either Kjerstin
Mackie or Colleen.Wilson
